King Island lies off the north-west
coast of Tasmania and marks the
western edge of Bass Strait. This
charming island is renowned for its
high quality natural produce,
receiving international acclaim for
its bries, local crayfish and beef.
Offering the visitor many natural
attractions, it is rich in wildlife
and coastal beauty.
Day 1:
Currie, Elephant Bay, Grassy
Arrive on King Island, a land of
fine gourmet food, unspoilt beaches
and an abundance of wildlife. Enjoy
a short tour of the township of
Currie before transferring to your
accommodation. Late this afternoon,
we visit Naracoopa and the wide
beaches of Sea Elephant Bay. Journey
to the island’s eastern side to the
old mining town of Grassy. This
evening, savour a delicious dinner
featuring King Island’s most
delectable local gourmet produce. As
dusk approaches, watch the little
penguins as they make their way from
the surf to their burrows.
Day 2:
Full Day Tour, Cape Wickham
Lighthouse, Whistler Point, Cheese
Factory Today travel to
the north of the island and enter
Lavinia State Reserve. Here you can
see the natural beauty of King
Island at its best. During spring,
admire a colourful landscape and
look for various delicate orchids
hidden throughout the bush. Visit
Lavinia Beach, home to a popular
surfing spot and Pennys Lagoon, a
rare suspended lake formation. Stop
at Cape Wickham Lighthouse, the
tallest in the Southern Hemisphere,
standing 48 metres high. On a clear
day, you may even be able to see the
Victorian coast, over 80 kilometres
away. A delicious lunch consisting
of quality King Island produce is
included at Penny Wickham. This
afternoon, stop at Whistler Point
and admire the spectacular views
overlooking Christmas and New Year
islands. Enjoy a refreshing beach
stroll to Yellow Rock and pass by
the remains of the paddle-steamer
Shannon, wrecked in 1906. Visit the
cheese factory, where you can
purchase a range of delectable
items.
Day 3:
Kelp Factory, Netherby, Home
Tour Australia’s only kelp factory,
where you can purchase unique
delicacies. Visit British Admiral
Beach and see the wreck site of the
Netherby. Transfer to Currie Airport
to meet your flight |
