From 1791-1888,
thirty seven ships were known to be
wrecked in and around Raine Island,
Wreck Bay and Cockburn Reef in the
Far North. The early surveying of
the Great Barrier Reef in the search
of a safe inner route resulted in
the erection of a beacon at Raine
Island in 1844 marking the first
'safe' route through the Great
Barrier Reef, known as the Blackwood
Passage.
