White Cliffs Opal Field will bring home to you the remoteness and isolation of the early Australian pioneers. Mining still continues here but on a much smaller scale than during the first 20 years after opals were discovered in 1887.

Here in White Cliffs you will have the opportunity to learn how this unique community lives in their underground houses. We'll go "fossicking" in the 'Old Field' where over 50,000 holes have been dug since mining began, and of course visit a local opal show room or two.

Today Silverton has a population of less than 50 and is home to some very recognised artists. The Silverton hotel is a major draw card; a typical outback pub that has been the focus of hundreds of movie shoots, advertisements and travel shows. Thus, Silverton is known as the "Hollywood of the Outback". Within the Silverton area there are some incredible landscapes and none quite as breathtaking as the Mundi-Mundi Plains. You'll see all this and more during your Silverton tour.

Day 1: Arrival in Broken Hill
Depart Sydney at 6.20am on board the Countrylink Explorer train. On arrival into the Broken Hill Train Station at 7.10pm you will of course be met by your host, Broken Hill's Outback Tours, and transferred to your accommodation.

Day 2: Around Broken Hill
A full day today, exploring Broken Hill, the “Silver City”. Starting with a visit to the School of the Air followed by a city sights tour and then on to Whites Mining and Mineral Art Museum before lunch. In the afternoon we go to the Pro Hart gallery and the International Sculpture Symposium. Dinner is at JJ's Restaurant in the Legion Club.

Day 3: Explore the City Centre
Your meals are provided today, but you have a chance to relax and explore the city centre at your own pace. With many museums, art galleries and historic features in the heart of the town, your guide will be able to give you details and ideas of what to see and do in this vibrant historic city.

Day 4: Royal Flying DoctorService & Photographic Exhibit
It's off to the Royal Flying Doctor Service and the Photographic Recollections Exhibit this morning with lunch at MacGregor's Café at the Line of Lode Miners Memorial. After lunch we enjoy some time at the Thankakali Aboriginal Art Centre, if time permits we may visit another gallery of local interest. Dinner at JJ's Restaurant in the Legion Club.

Day 5: Menidee Lakes & Kinchega National Park
The Menindee Lakes and the Kinchega National Park are our destination today. At Kinchega National Park we take the scenic river drive along the mighty Darling where native bird and animal life abound among the spectacular river red gums. Morning tea at the historic Kinchega Woolshed and a BBQ lunch today too. The remainder of the day is spent exploring the Menindee Lakes System which has a water surface area seven times greater than Sydney Harbour; a real oasis and haven for wildlife.

Day 6: Silverton
Heading off for a morning tour to Silverton and the spectacular Mundi-Mundi plains. Silverton is renowned for it's art galleries and ghost town appeal. Nick named the “Hollywood of the Outback”, many movies such as MAD MAX II and A Town Like Alice have been filmed here. Return to Broken Hill for lunch and a free afternoon. Dinner is also included today.

Day 7: Outback Sheep Station
Leaving Broken Hill we travel north to a working “outback” sheep station. This family owned property incorporates a privately imposed, registered natural sanctuary for fauna and flora as well as an abundance of Aboriginal rock art. Your guide will show you some wonderful things, including wildlife like big
red kangaroos and emus etc. We enjoy lunch in a nice spot, then continue our journey through ever changing countryside to the White Cliffs Opal Field. Dinner and accommodation will be at the famous underground Motel - a unique experience!

Day 8: White Cliffs Opal Fields
A great day today looking around the White Cliffs Opal Fields with over 50,000 mine shafts testament to the early days. Catching up with all the friendly folk in town, experiencing the unique way of life in this remote township, with a chance to buy some quality opal stones or jewellery. After a great morning of fun around White Cliffs we will have lunch at the Dug Out. In the mid afternoon we return to Broken Hill via the Barrier Highway. Dinner is at JJ's Restaurant at the Legion Club.

Day 9: Local Transfers
This morning you're collected from your accommodation and transferred to meet the train at 7.30am for your return journey home. Time of arrival in Sydney at approx. 9.50pm
