This tour will take
you on a world of discovery through
various national parks across the
outback. Places visited include
Outback Sheep Station, White Cliffs
Opal Field, Menindee and Mungo
National Park - Mildura.
Day 1:
Depart Sydney late morning with REX
Airlines flight to Mildura, where
you will be met at the airport and
transferred to your accommodation.
Afternoon at leisure. Dinner and
overnight included.
Day 2:
Departing Mildura we make our way to
the Mungo National Park, home of the
World Heritage Area of the ancient
Willandra Lakes. Up until 15,000
years ago, the rivers in this area
ran high and the lakes were full.
Then the climate changed and the
lakes have been dry ever since.
These lakes preserve the longest
continual record of Aboriginal life
in Australia, dating from 40,000
years ago. The almost lunar like
landscape with its amazing "Walls of
China" and the spectacular wildlife
will inspire the photographer and
enchant the nature lover. We enjoy a
picnic lunch here and in the mid
afternoon we make our way to
Menindee via Pooncarie, an old river
port town on the Darling River. We
arrive into Menindee and check into
the Burke and Wills Motel, with time
to freshen up before dinner at the
local Maidens Hotel.
Day 3:
The day is spent around Kinchega
National Park with its spectacular
Menindee Lakes. When full to
capacity, the surface area of these
lakes is seven times greater than
that of Sydney Harbour! Taking the
‘scenic drive’, we follow the mighty
Darling River where native bird and
animal life abound among enormous
river red gums. After a BBQ lunch we
pass back through the small outback
township of Menindee, the last stop
for Burke and Wills (early
explorers) on their fateful journey
into the unknown. Heading to Broken
Hill in the mid afternoon we arrive
and check-in at our accommodation.
Dinner in a local restaurant this
evening.
Day 4:
Leaving Broken Hill we travel north
for 120 kilometres to a working
outback sheep station. This family
owned property is unique as it
incorporates a privately imposed and
now registered natural sanctuary for
fauna and flora as well as an
abundance of Aboriginal rock art.
Your guide will show you some
wonderful things, including plenty
of wildlife like big red kangaroos,
emus, eagles and much more. We then
look for a nice place to have lunch,
before we continue our journey on
remote station roads, through ever
changing countryside, to the remote
White Cliffs Opal Field. Dinner and
accommodation will be at the famous
underground Motel - a very unique
experience!
Day 5:
We
will spend the morning inspecting
this extraordinary outback
settlement. Learn how and why the
community lives underground. Visit
some underground opal galleries and
perhaps purchase one of the
magnificent local opal products.
Before lunch we'll see the 'Old
Field' where in search for “colour”
over 50,000 holes have been dug
since the 1890's. In the afternoon
we return to Broken Hill with time
to relax before dinner and overnight.
Day 6:
Enjoy
a free day until transfer to the
train station for late afternoon
departure on board the world famous
Indian Pacific train to Sydney.
Dinner is included in the "Gold
Kangaroo" dining car and your
accommodation will be a First Class
Sleeper Cabin. (First Class ticket
is included in tour price).
Day 7:
A light breakfast will be served
before arrival into Sydney Central
Station at approximately 10:30am.
