Gecko Canoeing Adventures

Our canoeing tours enable you to experience the Katherine River at its best. Comfortable 'down stream' touring, incredible wildlife 'close ups', and relaxing camping with chairs, tables and someone to do the dishes for you, all add up to a unique holiday experience. Sleeping under a blanket of stars, waking to a chorus of birds (and a hot cup of coffee), we aim to please.

It is our deliberate choice to tour outside of Nitmiluk National Park as our focus is on remote areas and contact with no-one but wildlife. If you want to include Nitmiluk (Katherine) Gorge, we can include a relaxing boat cruise as an addition to your itinerary. Other rivers, other areas, other exciting experiences are also on offer, just ask! Let us know what you want and we'll put it together for you, designed and priced to your requirements.

An early start for a fantastic day. After being picked up from your accommodation at 6am, your guide will drive you through some of the Top Ends tropical savanna grasslands out to the Flora River Nature Park. Here is where the journey really begins, on the Flora River. Amazing Calcium Karst 'Tufa Dams' line the river, Pandanus, Paperbarks and Livistonia Palms bordering either side. Crystal clear waters, fish, turtles, plenty of bird life and of course the occasional croc.

A day of relaxing and a day of adventure, an experience that you would be unlikely to find anywhere else in Australia. Definitely worth the early morning start.

Our most popular trip (although our guests say that it ended too quickly). Using top quality equipment and accredited, qualified guides, this trip covers 40 to 55 kilometres of wildlife rich river. Fed by springs and soaks year round, the river winds through rocky banks, paperbark forests, small sparkling rapids and pandanus channels. Comfortable bush camping, great dining, fantastic service and wildlife encounters - it all adds up to being a unique experience. A trip you will never forget.

7 days gives us time to immerse ourselves in the wilderness, away from immediate civilisation and deep in the tropical savanna outback. Taking in the best of both the Katherine and Daly Rivers, we are now able to explore probably the most fascinating and inspiring spring fed river system in the country. The Flora River is a unique emerald coloured system which is deep and clear. View the limestone formations constantly growing across the river on jewelled 'dam like' barrages, and see if you can spot the rare Pig Nosed Turtle in the clear, sandy depths.

Canoeing Tour on the Northern Territories Katherine River in Australia

Journey from Katherine along the Victoria Highway to Western Australia stopping along the way to view the mighty Victoria River. Get out and stretch your legs at Gregory’s Tree which is located 15km northwest of Timber Creek. This large boab tree stands at the campsite of the early explorer Augustus Charles Gregory’s North Australian Expedition

Continue onto the Lake Argyle Tourist Village. Here we will unpack and prepare for our canoeing adventure on the Ord River. Accommodated in a comfortable Villa style unit overlooking the spectacular Lake Argyle, you will be able to relax and watch the sun go down, shedding its light on the stunning red escarpment of the Carr Boyd Ranges whilst enjoying some nibbles and your favourite glass of wine.

Over the next 3 days you will drift through the red escarpment while the rock wallabies peer down at you from their ledges high up in the rock. Enjoy floating through Carlton Gorge and walking through one of the many canyons to explore secluded fresh water swimming holes, cut off from the main river.

The river tour will finish at the Zebra Rock Gallery, here you can wander up to the shop and peruse the fine works of art that have been carved out of this 670 million year old rock. Kunnunurra will then be waiting for you, spend a night accommodated before taking the return trip to Katherine. Stopping into Gregory National Park on the way will give you an insight into one of the most untouched National Parks in the Northern Territory.
